For computers, buying cheaply and often will only leave you constantly in a world of shit.

no no, the NEC is faster. lol and yes after i found it i changed my choice XD (its only cheaper cuz its OEM btw, sony OEM is like 2 bucks more.)

i cant find the 3500, only 3520? im assuming its a version locking out the 3500's modability?

Well 2 out of the 4 of those sony drives they had didnt even work, and the 2 that did didnt do what they were supposed to do

One would only burn to -r/-rw disks and one would only burn to +r/+rw disks and not as fast as rated

This nec i have is wonderful, burns any disk i throw at it and today i just reflahsed hte firmware on it to version 2.17, which was hacked to make it RPC1 (which means it was region free and had an unlimited number of region changes) and removed the rip lock (which increased my dvd movie rip rates from 40 min to 10 min)

It is solid and i can burn 4x disks at 8x without fail, the nec dvd drives are great. That particular sony is SHIT.

Make sure you reflash with an RPC1, and rip lock removed firmware (which will require a real dos environment) Ill post a link if you give up on how to do that.
