Q, you've been in Geometry, right? How exactly does one use Sine, Cosine, Tangent, Cotangent, etc.? I'm failing this stupid class..

And why does my teacher take points off for writing "Sin" like this:

I can't get to that link up there.

But anyway, sin, cosine, and tangent are the three basic trig. functions.

In a right triangle, you have the two legs, usually called the opposite and adjacent, and the hypotenuse (the longest side, which is always opposite from the right angle).

Sine is the ratio between the opposite and the hypotenuse. The opposite leg is the leg opposite of the smallest angle in the triange.

So, if we have side measures of 10, 5, and 2, you would know that 10 is the hypotenuse, and 2 is the opposite. Sine equals opposite over hypotenuse, or 2/10, which is 1/5, or .2.

Cosine is the same, but with the adjacent leg instead of the opposite. (adjacent/hypotenuse)

So, if we use 10, 5, and 2 again, it would be 5/10, or .5.

Tangent is opposite/adjacent, which would be 2/5.

An easy way to remember this is by SOH-CAH-TOA.

The first letter in each set above is sine, cosine, or tangent, and the next two are what they are.

For instance, SOH: Sine, opposite/hypotenuse.

Sin = the inverse of the sin

sin = basic trig function

you shouldnt need these in geometry.

If your interested take a look at cot sec and csc.

see? Chapter 8, Section 5, introduction of tan, Section 6 is full of sin cos and tan questions.

As Q plainly knows the sin, cos, and tan are the basic TRIGONOMETRY functions.

I could care less what books they appear in they are trig functions... end of story
