Wireless Internet

#1 Post by 2005 » Fri Sep 08, 2006 3:12 pm

So, I get my 634M setup and take my unlces laptop home to test out my wireless.

First hitch was that it wouldnt work with WPA2-PSK and I had to use WPA-PSK. The signal seems to be 60% no matter where im at in the house, and bandwidth is about 2.1 Mbits all over the house.

My question is, if I buy a card for my PC is this all I should expect? I mean wireless is nice, but I dont wana trade 2 Mbits for it.....

Im thinking and hopeing that the wireless card in the lappy is old (since it doesnt support WPA2) and that a newer card should get me closer to my 4 Mbits. I atleast want 3 before Ill give up the cord....

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=422&sec=0

just get that lol, seeing as that is the card dlink matched up with their 634M, the speed achieved with them will be the max :]

which doesnt look bad

but still, its a desktop. let it keep its wire o-o

oh and how are you testing the connection speed? dont use testmy.net, i used to do that and also peaked at about 2.1mbits, but I can transfer at around 1.2MB/s (9.6mbits) usually so that cant be right

Sure I got my 1.2MB/s speed test transferring through the network, but doesnt that equal the speed of the wireless? as long as the internet is of a slower speed than that its all good and you should get your full internet speed

Right now I average 370kbps on this lappy (posting from now). I guess you can attribute the 80kpbs loss to WPA-PSK????

Which isnt bad at all, because its annoying to have to run wires across the floors... ill eat 80kbps for that... but not 250 or something lol.

You see my dear PB

54mbps = my speed now
4.5mbps = my best ever cable speed

So the router is capable of over 10x what the internet connection is.

Yes but you see, no one has ever reached 54mbps on 54mbps equiptment, usually not even half that. Your best ever cable speed however, was an actual achieved speed.

For WPA to take up 18% of your internet bandwidth is a strange concept, wouldn't it be easy to let the other at least 750kbps or so handle the encryption bandwidth? Are you saying the wireless equiptment slow themselves down to the internet cap?

No im saying that for some reason the wireless equipment isnt going as fast as the internet can.

This desktop gets 4.5mbps and with the laptop I get close to 3 at best.

I could care less if the equpiment can transfer 54mbps over a homenetwork.... what I want is my fucken 4mbps net bandwidth.

what difference is there between homenetwork and internet? the internet goes through the homenetwork so the only possible limitation is the homenetwork.

True, so then the home network is HELLA slow (wireless anyhow).

I dont have two wireless devices to test the bandwidth yet, but it probably is no where near 54mbps.
