im using xp, i kno what stand by is, i read all that crap that i found on google bout standby vs hibernate but my question is:

say i put up an away message, go to stand by, my computer is in a "lower state of power," during this time do other pple see me online on their buddylists? can they leave me messages that i can read when i power up? (btw is this a hardware q or a software/os q)

I think it's both a Hardware/Software question. I don't know about your PC, when I put mine in standby, it signs me off MSN/AIM. :( You should try. Do this: Sign on whichever IM messaging prog you use, put your PC in standby, put your PC out of standby, and see if your still signed in.

standby for at least 3 minutes. to make sure you didnt just skip a "check" with the server
