Maybe it has something to do with the will to live. The humans probably died faster with no activity or cause in life.
I bet if you think hard enough and use your imagination you can think of a few reasons why the machines did what they did.

Rapid Eye Movement.
REM sleep is where dreams occur. For whatever reason your eyes move back and forth rapidly when you dream. Like you're watching a movie.
