SuperOneClick!

That's what I used to root my phone. Pretty sure the actual rooting method is different depending on the phone.

I haven't bothered to root my droid x

I have no reason really but I do have friends who did.

Why do you ask?

Damn phone gettin glitchy, slow and unpredictable. Just did a factory reset and now I'm seeing if that helps. Most of the time I get low storage warnings, but sometimes I get random restarts. I was thinking of uninstalling some of the factory programs.

What phone do you have?

My droid X was being kinda shitty... it seemed to improve a lot when I got the gingerbread update.

My wife and I are using the LG Ally. I really should have never let that sales guy talk me into this phone. I do like LG but this phone is crap. since the restore it does seem to respond and perform better, so far.

update, spoke too soon. My phone just restarted using maps.

In general I don't think purely rooting would do anything to help stability/reliability. Rooting JUST lets apps do more than they were allowed to without root, so in terms of stability it would only introduce problems.
