Bandwidth Place 2

Here's the deal... I have a HP Pavilion 533W. I recently took it apart to clean it like I've done half a dozen times before. Cleaned CPU and HSF off put on new compound ect... (cept I got the tiniest bit on the green part of the CPU). Cleaned the dust out of everything, took the case off the PSU to blow the dust out of it but didnt take it apart any futher then that. Hooked it all back up and it wont boot. No picture at all and no fans work.. even the power indicator on the front of the computer comes on and then goes back off after about 10 seconds.

Im not sure how the ram is supposed to be seated but could that even be it??? If the ram was in wrong would no fans work????? I dont think its in wrong, seems like it will only go in one way.

Would the thermal compound cause these problems... did it ruin my CPU?????

I fear the mobo is dead but I hope not. Its not under warrenty (and if it were it would be void because I opened it up and played with it). The real bitch is though, the recovery partition is linked to this mobo... so if it goes bad and I cant get the exact same one not only do I have to buy a new mobo but windows XP as well.

find a spare power supply you can borrow and try it, i would bet its the PSU.

Even though the HDD's and Disk drives still work?? You think its the PSU hmm ill check it out.

Just weird, I thought that wouldnt be it since all that wasnt powered was the fan (and mobo as far as I know)

Someone else suggest that the ram and cpu might not be seated correctly

Got it working, posting from it.

Seems either the CPU or RAM wasnt seated correctly. I think the CPU lol because I put it in wrong and the one corner is like wierd looks like this and I put it in wrong and there were pins where the slant is supposed ot be and it make new holes lol. but it works now

RAM not seated properly can do some real damage to the board and maybe even the CPU, dunno how you're going to be able to improperly seat the CPU while still being able to put the heatsink on..
how many sticks of RAM? try each by themselves

2 sticks of ram, and they can only fit one way due to a small half circle thats position sligthly off center, so unless you put it in the right way it wont go in.

Computer is up and running fine... just as good as before. Except all the cleaning seemed to do cooling some good. CPU idles at 35-36C now...

Not sure if the fan was an exhaust fan, but its now an intake fan pushing air right on top of the HSF.

woops you had a third post i missed. what i mean by putting the RAM in improperly is when you dont push it in all the way, the things tilted. THAT is bad shit. i quadruple checked my RAM insertion for my tolchester XD

lol yeah my celeron 466 pc is like... nooo idea which way the CPU fan was blowing. from the case design the PSU fan is DIRECTLY above the CPU, so close that for the past few years the heatsink has just been using the PSU fan for cooling. and from its design, the CPU fan should have been an exhaust? so it would match the direction of the PSU fan 3mm above.. but then again the original PSU fan died in two years so... maybe the super-invincible little CPU fan owned the PSU fan while it was an intake.. but that part doesnt really matter.. what does matter is how i doubt that the heatsink is aluminum OR copper

yeah it should be intake, it would make the most sense.. exhaust most of the air flow may have been right at the top of the fins, closest to the fan.. not efficient
