Well, during these days of inactivity on this forum I've been busied by group project work, plenty upon plenty of homework (procrastination kills), an HDTV, and an LCD I bought from a friend.

:] Whatever, anyway, I took pics of my new dual monitor setup ^^

Things you see in the pic:
Viewsonic A90, Sony SDM-HS93, Sennheiser HD-280 Pro, Logitech MX1000 + dock, Motorola RAZR V3c (Verizon, with a T-Mobile lanyard cuz im pro.), Creative Inspire T3000 (you can kind of see the sub in the back, between the globe and the fake flowers), D-Link DI-634M, Creative WebCam Live! Pro, Antec P180, and other things not worth mentioning.

same thing with the Mac Flurry screen saver (ported, of course)

LCDs suck at displaying black. That is an absolute fact.

Yeah, I was bored. Now back to homework.

The technology is what differs. Ask anyone who's even semi inclined in digital photography/art and they will tell you hands down that LCD's take the cake

I don't know if it means anything but my Digital Imaging teacher uses a 21" CRT. How can LCDs be preferred with their inability to display black?

I still have my account :D

my thought about the LCD and CRT and why they suck in black is because of the backlight and the type that is being used; LED, ELP, CCFL etc... After some research and thinking, my hypothesis on why LCD are good for photography is because of the different types of backlights available. There are different color LED that can be used for backlights but the most popular is white and since white and black are totally opposite each other AND they are layered right on top of each other, it causes the black to not be the true black, but this is why it is good for photography.

The white backlight brings out the colors, it makes the picture more vibrant, that is why when painting a R/C lexan body, the next layer of paint is always important, if you want the body to pop out and look bright, you back it with a bright color like white, which is what most LCD screens use. In art class our teacher would never let us use black when painting because there is never true black in paintings/photography, factors like light always changes the tone of the color, so therefore true black is almost NEVER in photographs and you will never have a problem with black!

How do CRT monitors get light?

That is my thought

It uses some needle worth of light and makes it illuminate each pixel at a time, going by every other row from top to bottom, then the other half of the rows afterwards. black pixels = the light doesn't beam when its on that pixel.

is that for high end LCD's? Why is there backlight bleeding then for cheaper LCDs?

No lol I was talking about CRTs.

high end or low end, LCDs bleed a shitload of light when its trying to be black.

oh gotcha. My dell ultrasharp 2007wfp is doing great no bleeding, but the old viewsonic va912b started to bleed over a period of time. Its on a swivel arm so it's pretty cool!
