Wholey noob OC'er batman!!!!!!!

#1 Post by 2005 » Tue May 02, 2006 7:34 pm

Well lets just say that one of these three statements (or possibly all three or a combo of them) are correct.

1) This DFI board is faulty and fucked in the head

2) This POS opteron with a POS stepping is a POS

3) Im the noobest OC this side of noobville

First off I figured I could go for 2.2ghz right off the bat, WRONG!!

I set my FBS to 245mhz and my ram divider to 166mhz. That would have put my CPU at 2205mhz and my RAM at 200.45454545 mhz. Didnt raise Vcore at all. Set HTT multi to 4X and tried to boot... didnt even get into windows... crashed at the windows loading screen.

So I figure WTF... I think I may have to manually set all my ram timings instead of leavin them at auto. I also set my multi from auto to 9X (even though I when I tried 210FSB and left it at auto it still used 9) because I've heard people say not to leave it at auto. I dont know about voltages... unless its somthing stupid thats causing me to crash (which with a DFI board it wouldnt supprise me).

The only thing is that at 210x9 with a 1:1 ram divider the temps were way to high. CPU went to 41C load, and PWM IC went to 51C while chipset didnt go up that much... it fluctuated at 48-49C on stock cooler.

I know the 0607 opteron 165 isnt the best OC'er... but COMON I have ot be able to get more then freakin 90mhz lol.

It was the settings... I think the ram ones.

I manually set tCL to 3, tRCD yo 3, tRAS to 6 and CPC yo 1T.

Set HTT to 245 and multi to 9x. DRAM frequency to 166, CPU vcore to 1.35V and startup Vcore to 1.5V.

Works like a fuckin charm, did 32M superpi calculation in 34m 45 seconds with ram timings of 3-3-3-6 1T. I aslo raised ram voltage to 2.70 but im relowering it back down to 2.6 and setting tCL to 2 and see what we get.

Temps weren't to bad. 38C CPU during the super PI test and 49C PWM IC and chipset temps. Im replacine the NB cooler with a 7$ one that drops the temps 10C on average FTW. Also adding another antec tricool to front of case for better airflow.. intake FTW!!

the extra tricool from the bottom of the case will not fit in the front. you can, however, replace the top one with the thick one, and then put the thin one that used to be on top in the front. :]

good to hear about the OC, good to hear superpi didnt crash 32M >< wtf is up with mine

Well I was only at 2.2ghz...

SP04 ran 8 hours on blend and small FFT's with zero errors or warnings. It completed super PI twice (I re ran it once I got my cas latency back down to 2.5 and it only saved me like 20 seconds) with no errors. Temps were 44C CPU, and 52C PWM IC and CHIPSET using stock amd heatpipe HSF and tricool fans on low. Setting the tricool fans on high got me 39-40C CPU, 49C PWMIC and 48C CHIPSET. I will put the thick tricool on top and put the one from on top in the front, heat rises so the top one doesnt have to pull quite as much air.

Going for 2300mhz tonight, hopeing to keep stock voltages.

lol the thick tricool moves more air, with less noise, on Medium than a thin tricool does on Low

LOL oo 100 more MHz XD, when i did it was like "fuck this" and i went from 2200 to 2500, like 4 days after the PC was assembled. 2500 is still my highest stable!!! *tears*

2340 stable...

32M super PI passed in 33M 19S

Temps were 41C load and 29-30C idle (ambient temps were MUCH lower today).

SP04'ed for 20 min... core 0 small fft's and core 1 blend.

you should do core 0 blend, core 1 small fft :] usually core 0 is the "badder" core and my core 0 is "badder". yet if i run small fft on it and blend on the other, the small fft fails after like 15 hours, but if i do blend on core 0, it fails in a few minutes. faster error detection!

2430 stable for 9.5 hours

Super PI stable

Blend CPU 0 Small FFT's CPU 1

270x9 @ 1.425V

I got 285x9 to boot but only at 1.475V which sucks. You can tell my CPU is starting to hit a wall. It only needed .050V to get from 1.8 to 2.3 stable, another .025 to get stable on 2.43 and then .075 more V to just boot at 2565. I should be able to get 2.6 just below 1.5V and it should top out at 2.65-2.7 on 1.55V (which I wont do)

Ebaying this opteron off and trying for an 0610 (3.0ghz easy) isnt sounding to bad right now... but is it worth the 400mhz???

I mean the computers faster... but the difference between 2.3 and 2.5 isnt earth shattering. If I can get atleast 300 back out of this 165 ill try again.

always gotta fight for that extra 20 points in benchmarks man :] but otherwise yeah.. i played some BF2 at stock 2GHz and my fps went down by maybe 3.. lol

meh.. I can tell I need alot of tweaking right now.

This werid thing happens... like when im priming at the lowest voltage possible to get an OC to boot... somtimes weird shit happens. Like dual prime doesnt fail but the computer sorta freezes up, primes still running but I have to click the mouse and wait 5 min for a response....

Uping the voltage .25v helps most of the time. I want to set the PCI-E freq back to 100mhz and mess with the CPU VID special setting... it applies a percentage to the Vcore you select.

Say you select a Vcore of 2.0V and a VID special of 150% your true Vcore would be 3.0V. Its usefull if your cpu locks you to a certaint voltage.

I think I can get stable at 2.565 with a Vcore of 1.525 but thats it. I dont wont to go any higher and this operton isnt capable of much more. I might try to sell it for 300$ and buy an OEM one from monarch compupters as they were giving out alot of 0610's which OC to 2.8 on stock volts and cooling.

who would buy it for 300??

lol the VID special sounds nice, better than just the Overvolt mine has, which ups it by 0.2V. my CPU locks me to up to 1.4V, so i can do up to 1.6V, which is plenty but others still have done 1.7V in their OCs and.. oh well lol

i just rotated the freezer back to original direction and moved the RAM sticks back to slots 1 and 3, all like before. i can boot into 2.61GHz again XD

im gonna go try the really really loose settings the gigaram guy used when clocking the RAM to 295MHz. except my RAM will be at 217MHz due to 166 divider.

Who wouldnt buy it for 300$, no stepping is gaurenteed... you may get one that wont go above something stupid like 2.2ghz.

oh so what they dont know wont hurt them? XD

i know if i was to ebay my 3800+ i would be like

"
USED AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Toledo core

I purchased an Opteron 165 (or 170) for better overclocking capabilities. This X2 3800+'s stepping is CCBWE 0534TPMW, as seen in the picture. My goal was 2.7GHz and this CPU is incapable of such an overclock. It however, can run at 2.5GHz 100% stable, given that your motherboard can do 250MHz FSB/HTT. It will come in its original packaging including the stock heatsink. The heatsink's thermal paste has been cleaned off, but by request I can include an old tube of Arctic Silver 3 that should still have enough for a few more appliances. The little tab on the heatsink that allows you to use a flat head screwdriver to install the heatsink has broken off, so mounting it may be slightly more difficult, otherwise everything is good to go.

I would say this CPU is best for someone whom wants to make an AMD based dual core system for the least possible amount of money."

buuut, no. i would simply use it on my ECS board and assemble some system using spare parts :P an X2 3800+ with one stick of 256MB PC2100 RAM ftw!!
