Getting CompTIA A+ certified

#1 Post by 2005 » Thu Aug 24, 2006 3:08 pm

Well, before the end of september I'll be A+ certified (or whevener the new 06 A+ test comes out). I figure it will be good to sort of "prove" my abilites so to speak and will make getting hired oh so much easier.

This comes after a wakeup call, to that of which I owe my uncle untold gratitude.

After working for him this past year, my eyes have been opened to so many facts. I dont want to be where im at anymore any longer then I've already been here. I work long and hard for little pay, am subject to things/treament that wouldnt be justified with twice my hourly salary. I go out of my way and often put off things I want to do in order to watch his dog on the weekend while hes doing what he wants to do. I get every single peice of shit work that comes through the place.

My friend works at Circuit City and makes $8.50 an hour which after taxes would be bring home what I am now. Except Ill be doing somethign I like to do, wont have to walk/watch a dog and wont be subject to the things I am here.

The deal gets better from there. My friend informed me that he doesn't thing they are brining on any more computer repair techs at his current location and my chances arent so great to being with (due to no certs of any kind). While I wouldn't mind a job like his, I would wrather be a repair tech due to its more my line of work ( I HATE dealing with people ) and the pay will be better.

They are opening a new BestBuy about 10 miles from my house and it indeed has a geek squad station. I was informed that the average starting wages are over 25,000 a year. So I've applied to be an IN store computer repair tech. I figure I have a decent chance since they dont already have draws full of resumes and arnt fully staffed yet. I have "voluenteer" work of maintaing a computer and small network for a "business" and I have built, upgraded and maintained my own machines for quite some time now (all put on the "resume" lol).

I feel its the first logical step in the career, after that Ill get my Network+ CompTIA cert and go from there.

Yes, I stated it as I will get certified on my own free will before the years out but that if it would allow me to be considered for employment that I would get it ASAP.

Harder then I had imagined, I do invision however they remove alot of the older WIN 95,98 2000 stuff from the new 06 A+ test. Thats really what gets me.... stuff from before when the only thing I was doing on a computer was makeing my art projects in middle school lol.

I've got alot of material to go over, but if they placed less emphasis on win 95, 98 I could do alot better and probably ace the sucker with no effort.

Network+ will be different.

A+ isnt too easy becuase of how much emphasis they put on the older shit.

When windows 95-98 was into full swing I couldn't have been 9-12 years old and wasn't worried about IRQ's or SCSI jumper configurations.... I was eating ice cream all day long and watching teenage mutant ninja turtles.

I have some good study material... with a week or two of some prep I can get it. I just want the new one to come out all fucken ready.

XP has been around for quite some time now, and even though I have a ton of time spent using 98 I never did anyting more then the average user stuff while with that OS.

XP's on the way out, so this is a GREAT time to get A+ certified. I wont be proficent enough with vista for probably 3-5 months after its already retail.

The new A+ should be here about end of september... and it looks as if Ill need the prep time. Some of these A+ free online tests have been pwning me lol.... mainly because there are questions here or there that I have NO IDEA about lol. You need to get 75% of them right atleast.....

What type of multitasking requires that an application voluntarily relinquish control of the CPU?

1) Non-Preemptive
2) Preemptive
3) Linear
4) Cooperative

Which of the following will give you information about how much memory you have and how it is being used?

1) MEMMAKER
2) MEM
3) CHKDISK
4) MEMSIZE

You receive an error message that your 9GB hard drive is out of space. However, when you run DIR, the total size of your files add to less than 9GB. How do you account for this difference?

1) Rounding
2) Math Error
3) Hidden Files
4) Drive specifications are in hexadecimal, whereas the DIR command calculates in decimal

Which of the following are required for Win9X startup?

1) IO.SYS
2) MSDOS.SYS
3) COMMAND.COM
4) CONFIG.SYS

You are manage the in-house computer systems for ABC company. Why would you recommend Windows 2000 over NT?

1) It extends the functionalities of NT
2) It provides full support for Plug-and-Play
3) It fully supports USB
4) It fully supports IrDA
5) It fully supports IEEE 1394

Your Windows 98 PC boots fine to DOS, but when starting Windows, your screen goes blank or is totally unreadable. You suspect that the proper driver is not installed for your video adapter. You decide you want Windows to startup using a standard driver which will work with your video adapter. What file do you edit to allow this?

1) CONFIG.SYS
2) SYSTEM.INI
3) WIN.COM
4) WIN.INI

After you have a shot at those ill post the answers or you can just google it and see. These throw you a curve
