Well its not uncommon to see gains like that. 20 months could net you about 40 pounds of muscle if you trained and ate right. I suspect he gained about 30 pounds of muscle and 10 pounds of fat, or maybe even 35 pounds of muscle and 5 pounds of fat.
You don't want to over train, just make sure your eating enough and giving your body a chance to recover.
