Small problem

#1 Post by Directive » Thu Nov 22, 2007 10:13 am

OK, I need some guidance. I have a Compaq notebook, v6105nr, and a Belkin Wireless G Router 2.4Ghz 802.11G. The laptop intermittently disconnects from the net. No rime to reason. The icon says I am connected but no activity. I try and repair and sometimes it comes back right away, and sometimes not for 5-10 mins. I am wondering which may be causing the issue, the router or the integrated wireless on the laptop. Using my 50' patch cable my connectivity is strong and consistent so it is ether something with the router wireless or the laptop wireless. I can't use my desktop for troubleshooting, its down for a few days and thats another story. Any ideas?
This is only my opinion, I could be wrong.

You really would need another device with wireless (one that you know work good for sure) to test.

If you could get a hold of another lappy with wireless and test then you'd know for sure.

Try pinging 127.0.0.1 and see what that gets you. You could also try and reinstall the wireless drivers as a desperation shot at fixing it.

I have reinstalled the driver. Also, when the problem occurs, I try rebooting the modem, router and computer. Nothing seems to work but time. like I said, 30 seconds to 10 min later it connects. If you were to replace one or the other (ie new router or new wireless network card for laptop) which would you replace first? I also know it may just be too much RF interference in my den, where my desktop (which is now down) and all my other computing electronics are.
I have no access to another laptop or wireless device.
This is only my opinion, I could be wrong.

This is what I would try to do

I wouldn't replace the router first, simply because it will be more expensive. You might try and get a wireless card, then if its not the problem try taking the card back and exchanging it for a new modem.

The easiest thing to do would be try to borrow a wireless USB adapter for your PC and test that with your router.

Hell yes get a small adapter today (Black Friday), I see a USB Wireless G adapter at fry's for 10 bucks a pop.

and test. im going to go with the wireless chip in the router overheating hypothesis on this.
For computers, buying cheaply and often will only leave you constantly in a world of shit.

OK people. I will get a wireless adapter for my desktop as soon as I can, that is, after I get it running. Thanks for your help. I will post my results as soon as I have an update.

Thats a PITA
Shouldn't have to do it that often, if at all.

If you have that problem, rest assured that its a problem most likely hardware.

The thing is, unless you have a known good working wireless device to test with your router then you can't know for sure which of the two components is bad.

If the router checks out, format the computer for the shit of it. If that does noting then you know your wireless adapter is to blame.

 FORMAT THE LAPTOP
I really need to get my desktop up before I can do anything. My order from Amazon may have been refunded for some odd reason.
