Lappy problems

I have a laptop running windows 7. When I boot, just a few seconds after the desktop shows up, I get a window popup "Windows explorer has stopped working" followed by "Windows explorer is restarting". This seemingly endless loop happens every few seconds. Happens both in normal and safe mode. 3 Attempts at system restore were failed. Tried sfc /scannow at command prompt and it said there were updates that need to be installed and asked to restart and do it over. Happened twice. Right now I am running Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool to scan for errors. When I open task manager and I select explorer.exe under all user processes and use my delete key, I got the desktop image only on screen but the problem stopped. When I restart explorer.exe it starts again.

Decided to just do a factory restore. I was able to connect to it through the network and as it was looping the crash, I copied what I need off it.

Windows 7 32 or 64bit? I'm wondering if it can be fixed just as simply as replacing explorer.exe with a copy from someone else rofl.

LOL I did think of that but too scared to do it. I should have tried just to see if it worked, if I could get the file to where it needed to be on the network. The lappy would crash way to fast to move it over in windows. Its windows 7 home premium, not sure if it's 32 or 64.

If explorer.exe keeps crashing I don't think an even worse copy of it really hurts anything.

You'll need to figure out that 32 vs 64bit thing though, one way you could check is since you have network access to the drive - just check C:\ to see if it has Program Files and Program Files (x86). Only 64bit would have the two folders, otherwise its just Program Files.

OR do it the Microsoft way and use the install DVD to do a recovery (repair?) which I believe replaces all Windows files.

Right now its up and running due to a complete factory re-install. All repair options failed and system recovery failed. I know how to check but lappy wasn't on and I was too lazy to get it. Even the sfc /scannow didn't work cus it told me I had updates pending, hmmm. I seem to think an update glitched irrecoverably. It's OK, I didn't lose anything important. It's just the travel/living room PC.

Oh okay then. Yeah I visited parents recently and rather than try to fix w/e problems they were having with their computers I reformatted them rofl. I'm so lazy now.

I also don't do windows update just because of past issues with updates messing things up. Initial update after installation to be current to that point is about as far as it goes.
