Need help configuring 2 HDDs.

#1 Post by Antix » Tue Aug 10, 2004 11:44 pm

I have an old 30 GB HDD, and just bought a new 120 GB HDD. I want to know if I can make a dual boot system with 1 operating system on 1 hard drive and another OS on the other HDD.

If I can, how would I set that up?
EX:
- Cable select
- One hard drive per IDE cable

I want it so someone can use Windows 98SE on the 30 GB HDD, while I use Windows XP Pro on the 120 GB HDD. I just don't want to have to do something like open the case and swap cables on HDDs.

Also, this is a Gateway computer so the Windows 98SE CD that came with it is bundle, so it has other programs such as Norton Antivirus on the disc as well. I only brought this up because I have 2 optical drives so I want to to put the Windows XP Pro Upgrade CD in tray 1 and put the Windows 98SE Bundled CD in tray 2 so the Windows XP CD can detect that I own a previous version of Windows. I don't want to have to install Windows 98SE then update to Windows XP. It waste space. The only thing is it doesn't detect that Windows 98SE is on that CD, so is there a way that I can make it find it?

If not, do you know somewhere I can pick up a cheap copy of Windows (95 or whatever) so that I can use it as the CD to intialize the previous version?

/me doesn't read half of what you wrote

Just do this:

1. If your two drives are already hooked up and working then...

2. There should be two thingies in my computer (if you havent partitioned) C: and D:

3. Install OS 1 on C: and OS2 on D: no wiring needed

well to tell you the truth youll have to install windows 98 on them both, you cannot detect things in another cd rom drive while installing an os... install 98 on the smaller hard drive, then on the bigger... then if your copy of windows xp pro is an upgrade i think you could just install it over 98 (do a full install NOT A UPGRADE) on your d drive.

I already know all of this. AND mine ask for a previous Windows CD if there is no OS on the HDD and I let the upgrade disc start first. Tried it.

LAZY?!?! --- I know I am

120GB isn't hooked up to anything, just sittin' in case. I have had multiple drives hooked up before. 1 internal hdd, 1 external hdd, 1 external thumb drive, 1 DVD-ROM, 1 DVD+RW, 1 Floppy, & 10 Virtual drives. lol.

It would work. I just don't wanna install 98 SE & then upgrade to XP. Win 98 files are still on the HDD afterwards. I'm tryin' to find a site that has a Windows 95 CD for like $20 or so just so I can upgrade w/o havin' to install another OS first.

Plus, I don't feel like wastin' a lotta time installin' 98SE and then havin' to wait even longer to install XP after. Like I said 98SE disc is from Gateway so it has a lotta other crap on it.
