My New Rig
I want to know what you guys think of this, what type of ram should I get and what video card. I really dont wana spend more then 1200$ total but its not looking to good. Can I use DDR2 ram with that ASUS A8N Premium?? What do those timeing mean, and whats good or bad?? is 3-3-3-8 better then 2-4-4-7??? What CPU do you think I should go with?? I picked an AMD Athlon 3700+ (San Deiago) because its a 90 nm and I've heard the winchester core is good for overclocking for that reason. Plus the price difference is negliable between that and a 3400+ Vience.
Another big question about monitors and resoultion,
I remember dragon saying he plays WoW at 1600x1200, and while his 9600 PRO can do that does you monitor have to be able to do that for it to make a difference.
IE if i have a monitor with a max res of 1280x1024 isnt it stupid to play games at 1600x1200 because your montior can only display 1280x1024??? Because I dont wana pay 400-500$ for a 1600x1200 capable 17-19" LCD.
Should I go with a SATA or IDE hard drive?? Is one that better then the other???

no the A8N-SLI Premium does not support DDR2, you do not need DDR2, AMD may never use DDR2.
look at the timing thing urself: 'timing' = time + ing, for computers would you want anything that has to do with "time" to be higher?
if you're really overclocking, wouldnt it be easier to choose a cheaper processor with the same core? sure the multiplier will be locked upwards but you can always up the "FSB" right? i would personally go with the X2 3800+
in terms of performance, his 9600 PRO is far from being able to do 1600x1200 but dragon is a picky stubborn little bitch so he will live with his 5 fps. ANY modern card can do 2048x1536, the problem is if its PLAYABLE at that resolution.
i dont understand the playing 1600x1200 on a 1280x1024 screen thing..? thats impossible, thats like trying to stick dragon's penis in a straw (wait.. bad analogy!) the screen ratios are different as well. how about playing the GAME at 1280x1024? or 1280x960, the real 4:3 ratio.
SATA vs. IDE is no longer a question o.O. SATA hard drives are 'faster' and cheaper. period.
for games u need like a 4ms LCD or any CRT.
the chosen case posesses no power supply
do you really need to buy windows? longhorn IS coming out next (or next next) year..

The 3700+ is the slowest San Diego core out, all the others are 100$+.
Whats funny is dragons mobo doesnt support PC4000 yet he bought PC4000 ram. You say that the ASUS A8N SLI Premium doesnt support DDR2 ram yet in your new pc post you have that mobo with that mushin extreme PC4000 ram that dragon canelled. How can he even use it??
I wont be buying an os, at worst Ill use the copy of xp home from this box or "borrowing" XP Pro.
That X2 3800 isnt worth what it costs, it gets outperformed by singel core CPU's.
I notice now the PSU excluedence... and will fix.
Im leaning on an X850XT... anything else I like comes so close to that price range I might as well.

dragon bought the ram to be used in his next PC.. since it works in his current, why not? no one said his 2+ year old mobo used DDR2 and no one said the mushkin PC4000 was DDR2
theres a phenomenon right now about the Opterons for Socket 939, apparently theyre far cheaper than their A64 counterparts and do not have multiplier lock and/or can OC like crazy, check those out.
X800Pro isnt that much slower
http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphi ... ts-06.html
it IS noticably lower ranked (64 vs 78fps) but i think its the best bang for the buck at $200

if i wanted REALLY cheap, i would just get that and upgrade it (yes dragon, that system does own yours, you fucking wowtard)

Is that AMD Athlon 3500+ based on the Clawhammer or the Venice core???
That and do you think emachines would give me all the drivers for that online or something, because I would have to totally reformat that PC and put on XP home (PRO if I can get it). If I formatted it and didnt have any drivers would everything work like the media card reader or the optical drives???
Other then that its a good deal, if the 3500+ is based on the Clawhammer core then I would just leave it be. And I would just spend another 200$ and put in a X800GTO and OC it. I would have to buy a montior though and that would still put me over 1000$... so its really not that much cheaper.

who knows about emachine's policies... all i know is their refurbished link goes to gateway.
i dont think there was ever a 3500+ clawhammer... the only one that i saw for that model was the venice, and its been venice for months lol, i think it would be a 100% its a venice.
the system is STILL cheaper..

An AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Clawhammer, socket 939. I think the one they show is the Vience core, which would suck because it has 512kb less L2 cache. The system is good for the price but there are two issues... for one its a small case so adding and removing parts might need to to almost totally rip apart the computer. Like with this HP Pavilion 533W... to add a second HDD I have to rip out the Fan and Heat Sink off the CPU as they would be in the way. I would still need a monitor and have to drop another 200$ on a X800GTO.
EDIT: I now KNOW its a Vience core because it lists 512 kb L2 cache, and again I would need another Operating System as Media Center blows... would my XP home key work for a downloaded version of XP PRO???? It does have PC3200 ram which I guess is okay... it would be 1:1 with CPU.
I will have to get a monitor, the one dragon has would be nice but I think it still costs over 300$. Which would make an extra 500$ onto the 600$ that machine costs.. at that rate I would wrather build it myself and have the 3700+ San Diego

woops ok.. XD both the clawhammer and venice have 512KB cache.
how often do you expect to be adding and removing parts...
technically dragon's monitor doesnt exist anymore and i cant find any monitor as 1337 as his on viewsonics site O_O unless his wasnt a 19"

Your right, they both do have 512 L2 cache, its the 3700+ San Diego that has 1MB L2. The only differnce I can see between the Clawhammer and the Vience core is the process type. For that money im going to stick with my custom rig.. and dragons monitor can be found easily.

Temproarily out of stock, so INONO
I probably would swap out a burner or an HDD here or there, atleast once in the computers life time and i dont wana rip out mobo to do so.

dragon's monitor should not be that expensive anymore, its almost been 3 years! it must be the whole "oh were the only ones who still have it lets charge $380947"
swapping a burner shouldnt be that hard, all you need to have is like 2cm of space for ur fingers to push the cables in the back of the drive.. maybe get an enclosure for like 20 bux? have all your stuff externally through USB

But if the case boasts an extra 2 slots for HDD expansion, I want to be able to fucken reach and use them without ripping apart the whole thing. That and having a full size case will make cleaning much easer/ aide in keeping it cool.
