Networking

#1 Post by Q12321 » Fri Oct 20, 2006 12:26 am

I'm clueless on how to make this work, so I'll ask here.

My friend has a laptop that is connected to the internet through a neighbor's WiFi connection. Let's say I wanted to connect my desktop to my friends laptop, so he could get the WiFi connection, and we could both use it. How do we do this? Note we don't have a switch/hub, but I think my mobo can be used as one...

Second question, how do I hook up my friend's laptop to my desktop to allow both to see eachother and their files? Basically a file sharing connection. I've tried so hard, but never got it to work. Both machines are Windows XP

Why don't you get a wieless card for the desktop.
This is only my opinion, I could be wrong.

Don't really have the money to do so, haha. And we hardly ever connect directly.

Actually, a better question would be "How can I connect both computers so they see each other AND I can use his WiFi connection?"

without a switch/hub/router you need a crossover cable (not rollover), they're typically orange in color, so look for that in the store.

I dont remember much of it anymore, but you need to set your desktop in Setup home or small office network to w/e option says it gets its internet from another PC..
then do something similar but opposite on the laptop

I'm going to resurrect this thread...

How do I set up a network with a router so that two computers can see each other? Both can already use the internet.

Simple

Set Router up

Hook up both computers to the router via ethernet cables

Control Panel / Network Connections / Setup a
home or small office network (on the left hand side under network task)

Use common sense and assign each computer the exact same workgroup name like MSHOME

Tried it before and couldn't get it to work. I'll have to try it again.

Well you can make a network cd that will set it up the exact same way.

Perhaps a router setting or windows firewall setting is the culprit?

check/disable firewalls, check network name, and share some drives (right click on them > Sharing and Security)

You forgot a step, Open my computer. select Tools. select Map Network Drive. click Browse. select MSHOME and select the computer from that [+] drop list.

.. Or, you can open My Network Places and it will have shared drives showing as shortcuts.
